​A Birthday Reflection: Forty-Four Trips Around the Sun

As I begin my 44th trip around the sun, and instead of measuring the year ahead by goals or milestones, I find myself asking a quieter—but more meaningful—question: How will I show up in a way that leaves the world better than it was during my first 43 trips?

Before challenging myself for the year ahead, I look to what grounds me. I’ve always been a natural connector—a leader who thrives when helping others, opening doors, and learning along the way. These qualities aren’t accidental; they’re inherited, shaped, and strengthened over time.

Much of this comes from my late mother. She was the heart of our neighborhood, the matriarch of our family, and someone who made everyone feel welcome. She showed me that leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room—it’s about presence, generosity, and lifting others without expecting anything in return.

This year, I’m committing to creating opportunities that make life easier for those around me. I often think about a phrase fitness coaches use: It doesn’t get easier—you just get stronger. Life works the same way. The challenges that once felt impossible are now lessons I carry with me. And while new challenges will come—as they always do—I trust that persistence, growth, and learning will carry me through.

At this stage of my life, leadership feels less like ambition and more like responsibility. It’s my turn to guide others through doors I once had to open myself—to share access, perspective, and encouragement wherever I can.

As I celebrate another year, I’m grateful for the journey so far and hopeful for the one ahead. If I can lead with intention, serve with heart, and help even one person see what’s possible, then this next trip around the sun will be a meaningful one.
