A Life Changing Evening

The year was 2007.
I was on a rooftop celebrating the birthdays of my best friend Mike and his family. Summer air. City lights. Laughter. It was one of those Chicago evenings you don’t think twice about — until it becomes the moment everything changes.
And then there was this guy.
Sitting a little mysteriously off to the side. Flip phone in hand. Quiet. Observing. Marek.
I caught his eye once. And I knew he had caught mine.
The plan for the night was simple: head to a blues bar — Blue Chicago — with Mike and the family. But somewhere between the city skyline and that unmistakable spark in Marek’s eyes, I sensed there was something else...
I walked Mike's family down from the roof, helped them into a cab, and said I needed to run back upstairs. “Just to check on things,” I told them, I want to make sure we cleaned up properly...
Back on the rooftop, I suddenly found myself searching for nonexistent Corona bottle caps.
"Oh hey. Nice to meet you."
That simple introduction turned into hours of conversation — politics, life, ambition, ideas. The kind of conversation that makes time pass without either of us wanting it to end. The kind where you know something meaningful is unfolding.
Nineteen years later, Marek and I have built a life together that is bigger than that rooftop ever imagined.
A family. A community. A shared purpose.
Our story is intertwined with the Chicago Loop — not just as a place we live, but as the backdrop to our growth, our work, and our future.
Love stories begin where you least imagine. Mine began under city lights, pretending to look for bottle caps.
And I wouldn’t change a thing.
